The basis of site assessment for all pathways used to be the total pollutant content in soil. The examination procedure for the assessment of the soil-groundwater pathway changed after the Ordinance on Soil Protection and Contaminated Sites came into effect in July 1999. The transfer of pollutants to the groundwater can be estimated using in-situ investigations or laboratory tests (column experiments, batch tests). Soil sampling, pre-treatment and analytical investigations as various steps within this procedure are described. The problem of the correlation between the results from soil and soil water investigations is discussed.
