The continuous improvement of life standards simultaneously with population increase and the tendency to follow everywhere the urban life style, led to a world-wide solid waste increase. Sanitary landfilling is widely used for solid waste disposal but a careful site selection is necessary to address public concern. Mathematical investigations for the minimization of waste volume and area requirements are presented herein. Public conflicts are examined and treated through an information programme. However the provision of incentives, supported by available funds, is necessary. A case study is presented for a medium size landfill with the results of area requirements depending on the densities achieved through years of compactions and recycling. Conclusions about the methodology for selection of the best area for solid waste disposal to a landfill are presented.
