The possibility of using recycled building materials instead of material from natural resources as components of capillary barrier systems was investigated in a two year project. A test program was set up investigating on the suitability of materials as components for capillary barriers by determining the properties required of every material and the properties specific to recycled building material.

The materials studied were aggregates from crushed concrete, crushed sand-lime bricks and crushed clay bricks. Two different fractions for all three materials were tested with respect to their suitability as capillary layer and as capillary block layer. Consideration was given to the chemical impact of cement and potential contaminants.
