Landfill mining is the removal of material from old landfills. According to the state of the art, landfill mining must be applied to landfills which are to be or could be used as building land. For the longterm protection of ground water, stabilisation - if necessary with landfill mining - is also imperative. The best solution, according to knowledge gained from practical experience, is to convert from anaerobic to aerobic degradation through controlled gas exchange. Biological stabilisation of the waste then enables the separation of defined groups of substances. These can be re-used in industrial plants or recycled into environmentally friendly materials.
