Hydraulic transport is generally considered the most suitable method of transport to waste disposal sites for fly ash and slag. High-concentration transport can ensure that the transporting water does not segregate from the solid, instead, it remains bound to it. If the fly ash composition is suitable, concrete-type bonds are formed in the dense mixture, which results in setting and hardening of the solid. Construction of buildings is possible over cavities if they are filled with this type of mixture. Another application is the backfilling of underground mining cavities with the benefit that the hardened mixture considerably reduces subsidence at the surface. The first part of this paper deals with some principal environmental issues of densephase slurry transport. The second part is concerned with the environmental impacts of fly ash/slag landfills.
