Settlement of open-cast mine backfill occurs as the overburden pressure increases during reinstatement, with significant settlements occurring if the unsaturated backfill is inundated by rising groundwater once mine pumping has ceased. Settlements are often predicted on the basis of laboratory one dimensional compression test results. In this paper the effects of laboratory test scale are examined by testing specimens with different maximum particle sizes and different size specimens. The results show that proportionally greater settlements are recorded during tests on larger scale specimens.
