Ultrasonic scattering investigations in loading and unloading experiments have proven that the transmitted and backscattered energy of ultrasonic waves precisely reflects the distortion processes taking place in concrete due to mechanical compressive loading. Additional experimental and numerical investigations on model concrete, revealing concrete on the meso scale, have clarified the correlation between ultrasonic wave scattering and internal alterations within the structure of concrete. As a practical application of these findings it has been shown that the effect of clearly distinguishable elastic and non-elastic effects within the material can be used to get an estimate of the load history - especially the maximum load of concrete and a concrete structure during its life time.
