A research programme for the investigation of caisson breakwaters subject to breaking wave impact forces is outlined as a contribution to the revival of vertical breakwaters. Since the large-scale model study constitutes the key part of the programme, the first results of this study related to the impact loading and dynamic response of a caisson breakwater model are presented and discussed.
