The analysis of the design calculations of the Islay shoreline wave power device showed that design wave pressures for such a structure vary widely depending on the theory used. In order to clarify the situation, a wave load monitoring system for the Islay device was developed and installed. The pressures recorded so far were one order of magnitude lower than the design pressure. Using a statistical analysis of the results, 1/50 year pressures were determined. A comparison of these pressures with design pressures showed poor agreement between extrapolated and calculated values.
