12. Urban infrastructure rehabilitation in Canada

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) carried out a survey in 1984 (1) to assess the urban infrastructure problem in Canadian towns and cities. No comprehensive study on this subject existed in Canada at that time. This author was a participant in this undertaking, as a member of the Task Force of FCM, and specifically having responsibility for the data analysis and for the preparation of the initial report. Major emphasis in the study was given to roads, bridges, and sewer and water systems. The most important findings can be summarized as follows (2):

• A significant decline has occurred in the condition of the infrastructure in Canadian urban areas. Steps should be taken to halt that trend.
