A coastal construction might be exposed to a high number of various loads that it has to withstand throughout the whole design life. During design all these loads need to be noted by the designer, and the maximum expected intensity (characteristic value) of each load should be set. Figure 6.1 shows a typical variation of loads on a berth structure.

Figure 6.1 shows in some detail the various types of force which normally might occur on a berth structure. In this chapter the characteristic loads acting on the berth structure and the loads from the land side will be considered in detail. The characteristic loads from the sea side are mainly given in Chapters 2 and 5.
