Dear Dr. Haldane,
At the University of Surrey we are trying to put an increasing emphasis on design linking it with ourstructural analysis course. Pressure from other (equally important) subjects means that probably the time allotted to design is insufficient. Some of my colleagues argue that practical design is better taught in the design office. We are trying to engage a number of visiting staff to take part in design classes and have already
some liaison with firms of practising consultants helping us with occasional
lectures. We find that the main difficulties are due to the fact that design classes require the services of several members of staff (3 or 4) with current design experience.
