Planning decisions regarding the carrying out of development projects can have a significant impact on the environment. It used to be thought that the environment could adapt and absorb the changes brought about by developments. Now we are aware that a development affects the appearance and quality of the environment. A new development may have long-term adverse effects on the environment. It may bring changes to ecosystems. Whether we are talking about infrastructure projects, the creation of motorways or housing estates, or householder activities such as creating garages or extensions to homes, developments can produce many unforeseen and unexpected impacts on the environment.
