Chairman: Sir Arthur Whitaker, K.C.B., M.Eng., M.I.C.E. (President of the Institution)

CONFERENCE ON CIVIL ENGINEERING PROBLEMS OVERSEAS

Opening Session

Monday, 23 June, 1958

The President said it was his pleasure to welcome Sir Hilton Poynton, K.C.M.G., Deputy Secretary, Colonial Office, who had kindly agreed, at short notice, to deputize for the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Rt Hon. Alan Lennox-Boyd, in opening the Conference. He also extended a welcome to the many members and ladies present.

The Institution had held five successful Conferences in the past, starting in 1948 and being held every second year. On this occasion the scope of the Conference had been extended from a Conference on Civil Engineering Problems in the Colonies, to a Conference on Civil Engineering Problems Overseas, because it had been felt that the previous success warranted an extension.
