This paper describes the Structures Management Information System (SMIS) developed since 2000 by the Highways Agency, England. The system supports the management of maintenance activities for trunk road structures. SMIS integrates with other corporate, information systems.

SMIS was developed initially in conjunction with representatives from Agent users to ensure that a valuable management tool was provided for Agents. There is a comprehensive inventory and inspection reporting facility, with an accumulating history of condition of structures and maintenance work carried out.

SMIS development will now evolve from this sound base to provide support for corporate strategic decision making.
