Despite the increasing application of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) bonded sheets in bridge strengthening, external post-tensioning continues to be the most applicable technique in strengthening concrete box girder bridges. This is evident from a number of major bridges strengthened in the UK in recent years. This paper provides general guidance on the method and outlines areas where development of design rules in the UK would be of benefit.
