This paper outlines some bridge management issues associated with the construction of a second bridge across the river Meghna in Bangladesh. The bridge was required to improve transportation links between the capital city Dakha and the north eastern Shylet region of the country. The history and form of the existing multi span steel truss railway bridge, its foundations and river training works are outlined. The planning of the new road crossing is described; the potential effects of the new structure on the existing bridge, particularly with regard to scouring of the foundations are outlined. The form and construction of the new 1200m long award winning concrete bridge is illustrated and the issues of durability, particularly of the prestressing system described.
