This paper describes three case studies of strengthening rail bridges (both over-line and under-line bridges) on the UK rail network using Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite materials. The various stages in the strengthening process for the concrete and cast iron bridges are discussed (planning, site set-up, installation and supervision, quality assurance and future maintenance) and compared. Finally, the observed advantages and disadvantages of the FRP strengthening method are discussed as is the potential future use of the technology on the rail network.
