Sir William Glanville (Director of Road Research, Road Research Laboratory), said that he had six Papers to introduce and he had spent some time in looking for common features in order to treat them in a way which would bring them all together. He had to confess that in this he had not been very successful, in that the only thing that they had in common was that they all had some connexion with road building or road use. Indeed, in the 'case of Best's Paper, on high-grade concrete in the tropics, the connexion with roads was somewhat tenuous. Of the other five Papers, two were concerned with particular kinds of tropical soils as road foundations, two were concerned with road building in somewhat exceptional circumstances, and the remaining one dealt with the increasing traffic problems in cities overseas. Because of that range of topics, he had found it necessary to introduce the Papers by giving a very brief summary of each of them. The Papers were themselves short and pithy and in themselves almost summaries, so that his own summary of them would no doubt be considered quite inadequate by the Authors; but they would have the opportunity at the end of the Discussion to make good any omissions.
