The Carhuaquero hydroelectric scheme in South America includes an upper dam roughly 500 m above the power station, which is at ground level in a steep valley and connected by a system of tunnels and a vertical shaft. The 1000 m long pressure tunnel will be concrete lined toward its upstream end and the remainder will be steel-lined. Measurements of in situ rock stresses by overcoring were required to obtain design information for location of the transition from concrete to steel liner. Practical details of the stress measurements, the results and their interpretation with regard to topography and the regional tectonic environment are presented, together with an explanation of their use in the design.
