Cutter wear can influence full-face tunnel boring machine (TBM) performance in several ways, including cutter replacements and repair, loss of production time, and reduction of penetration rate. Cutter replacement records from four TBM construction projects are used to investigate patterns and rates of wear. Wear rates are shown to be a function of position on the cutterhead and rock type excavated. Abrasive wear is investigated using cutter disc diameter measurements. The rate of abrasive wear may be predicted using rock index properties, such as rock abrasiveness.
