During construction of a horizontal inset to a mine shaft at a depth of 764m in Coal Measures strata deformation of the 8.3m wide by 19m long excavation was monitored. Strains in the reinforced concrete inset lining were measured after construction. The case history illustrates the relation between deformation or relaxation of an underground excavation during construction and the subsequent pressure exerted on a lining.
