The strains developed in a concrete segmental lining erected behind the National Coal Board's MRDE Tunnelling Machine at Cadley Hill Colliery are being monitored using vibrating-wire strain gauges. The results obtained during the first 600 m of the proposed 1500 m drivage are presented.

It is concluded that embedded vibrating-wire strain gauges provide an accurate and sensitive method of monitoring the performance of concrete linings. In this particular case, although the mean circumferential strains are within acceptable limits, localised bending strains are present which have already caused some damage to the lining.
