In addition to the topics of the Paper, I would like to describe the role of theoretical studies in the assessment of sewerage problems. Such studies, particularly when combined with on-site measurement, can isolate areas of poor hydraulic performance which may be indicative of potential trouble; indicate basic limitations of the system which may affect priorities in remedial works; and apportion use of existing capacity between run-off due to rainfall, infiltration and genuine sewerage which may suggest alternative solutions. Some examples, in addition to these cited by previous speakers, may be of interest.
