Mr Gater (Paper 6)
Automatic Traffic Counting is very dependent on the reliability of its sensors for long term accuracy. This is why the inductive loop is generally used in preference to the pressure sensitive type of detector, unless the installation is of a very temporary nature. Unfortunately with the rapid spread in use of inductive loops there has been an increasing number of situations where poor installation and management of the loop and feeder has resulted in premature failure or unnecessary damage by Public Works such as installation of drains, water pipelines etc. This has caused some unfair criticism of the inductive loop techniques.
