Mr Fry (Paper 1)

Since this paper was written, the thinking of the Department of the Environment on the system of traffic data collection it needs has made further progress. The scheme now envisaged would reduce the present four traffic censuses to two. One would be a new version of the monthly 200-point census which would be totally automated using advanced microprocessor-based equipment of considerable versatility. It would serve not only the statistical functions of the present census, but would in time provide the continuous monitoring needed for the Regional Highway Traffic Models; andwould provide the potential for measurement of speed, distance between vehicles, and axle loads.
