Good Design is not just Engineering

Engineering per se is not a pure, definite science in the same way that astronomy and mathematics are. There are many answers to an engineering question — materials can work in tension or in compression or a combination of both and still perform the same function. It is the designer's intuitive sensitivity that limits the number of engineering options at his disposal, before refining them into solutions that turn engineering into an exact science. Occasionally the creative process demands new images or idioms, thus pushing out the frontiers of engineering technology.

Designers endowed with such sensitivity reach depths of reasoning and meaning. The structures are timelessly rooted in their location and designed to the technical requirements and aspirations of both the client body and
