Extradosed bridges are similar to cable-stayed bridges in that stay cables are used for strengthening. After introducing the concept of extradosed bridges by J. Mathivat, this new type of bridge has been constructed in Japan. This paper reviews some examples of extradosed bridges that were designed by the author, and highlights the differences between extradosed and cable-stayed bridges in terms of their structural aspects. Moreover, ideal span balance between center and side spans will be discussed. Future research on the subject regarding behavior of stay forces under ultimate load is proposed.
