Mr R. BELGRAVE (Paper 1) : Oil is not going to run out in this century. It is possible for coal and nuclear to be developed to take care of the growth of energy required and to substitute for oil in electricity and industrial heat. If that is done, there will be enough oil and gas for transport and chemical feedstock for the next twenty years and beyond. The United Kingdom is
in no different condition from the rest of the world except that our present self-sufficiency in energy gives us a 10 or 20 year breathing space which others do not have.
