It is my privilege to open this meeting of the British Nuclear Energy Society on the physics prob lems in thermal reactor design. I think we all have to express our satisfaction that the British Nuclear Energy Society has taken this step of organizing a meeting where all those groups of graphite, light and heavy water specialists, which in the past have mainly met at different times at different places, or at least in different rooms, are together.
