The paper provides a review of the work of several studies carried out at the University of Dundee on the use of CPF in concrete construction. Given the mechanisms by which CPF liners work, the paper explores the practical issues, which may influence these, to determine their impact on CPF concrete performance. The issues considered include material effects (cement type and chemical admixtures), CPF liner / construction details (liner characteristics, liner re-use, temperature during construction and curing conditions) and element arrangements (vertical height, slabs and sloping elements). The resulting impact was assessed by considering the surface properties of the concretes. The results suggest that the material, construction and element issues studied had an influence on the properties of concrete, but that the benefits obtained with CPF were essentially always maintained by a fixed amount. The characteristics of the liner were important in relation to achieving a good finish and performance, while re-use up to 3 times was found to still provide benefits to concrete.
