This paper describes the use of laser irradiation for removing graffiti written with paint or marking pens on mortar surfaces. Mortar specimens were used instead of concrete, and their water cement ratios were 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%. The graffiti was written with black, red and blue emulsion paints on the mortar specimen. A CO2 laser was used for removing the graffiti. Various irradiation energies were applied to these graffiti of mortar surface. It was found that, by irradiating 2 or 3 times using low energies, graffiti can be removed without damaging of mortar surface. The graffiti coloured black and blue can be removed completely with irradiation energies between 27.6 to 36.8 J/cm. The graffiti coloured red can be removed completely with an irradiation energy of 55.2 J/cm.
