Abstract
This paper presents some data obtained from laboratory tests performed using Ground Penetrating Radar, GPR, in order to measure water and oil contents. Results of laboratory Constant Mid Point tests, CMP were analyzed on basis of the Time Domain Reflectometry theory, TDR. All laboratory tests were performed on a pure sand, without fines. Electromagnetic pulses velocities of about 15 cm/ns were obtained for the hygroscopic water moisture (w ≅ 3%). Considering the soil in the water saturated state (w ≅ 24%), average values of 5 cm/ns were obtained. Even almost saturated with oil, soil presented high values of pulse velocity, of about 14 cm/ns. Based on laboratory results, a theoretical equation was proposed in order to predict the electromagnetic pulse velocity in multiphase mediums. The equation showed a good agreement with experimental results.
