This chapter highlights some of the challenges to be addressed when tackling structural engineering projects, initially focusing on the RIBA Plan of Work as a tool to guide relevant stakeholders successfully through all stages of a construction project. It is written primarily for designers, as opposed to contractors, but touches on other issues relevant to bringing a project to a successful conclusion, such as construction contracts, CDM regulations and other factors the author has found helpful in his role in delivering major projects, such as delay mitigation and commercial considerations.
