This chapter gives an overview of the main steps involved in a typical seismic assessment and retrofit project. As a starting point, it provides a definition of seismic risk, and describes how the components of the seismic risk equation (seismic hazard, vulnerability and consequence) are taken into account in risk awareness and mitigation. It then discusses some common retrofit project types, and special considerations that apply in carrying out risk management across a portfolio of multiple buildings. The main body of the chapter is an outline of the common steps in seismic risk mitigation projects, and a summary of each. The main steps are covered in more detail in subsequent chapters.
