This chapter covers the key subjects related to the seismic retrofit design process. The difference between global and local retrofit solutions is discussed before highlighting the fact that most projects require a range of intervention techniques. Different conceptual retrofit strategies are then illustrated graphically using the capacity spectrum method. The steps of a typical retrofit design project are discussed along with the special cases of vernacular construction and vulnerability-based retrofit. Several detailed design considerations, specific to seismic retrofit projects, are then identified, including the incorporation of sustainability in design, construction considerations, and the special treatment of material properties and partial factors.
