Seismic design has traditionally focused on the primary structure and preventing loss of life during an earthquake. The role that non-structural components play in seismic resilience has therefore often been overlooked in the past. This chapter highlights the importance of extending the scope of seismic assessment and retrofit projects to also include non-structural components. Discussion is given on the causes of damage to non-structural components, common damage observations, and the potential consequences. A selection of risk reduction measures are then discussed for various categories of non-structural components. These range from simple non-engineered interventions through to prescriptive measures and bespoke engineered solutions.
