Seismic design is one of the most important aspects in the design of building structures. Understanding of basic Seismology and seismic analysis and design fundamentals as well as seismic design principles of building structures constructed with different materials such as structural steel, reinforced concrete, reinforced masonry and engineering wood, including the associated foundation design principles are critical to structural engineers who design building structures. Seismic design consideration of non-structural components and Performance Based Seismic Design (PBSD) are also briefly discussed in this chapter. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of seismic design and the general introduction on the principles of seismic design of building structures for structural engineers. This chapter is not intended to be as a comprehensive reference but provides sufficient introduction on the subject for those who may be interested.
