Industries involved in the design, delivery and operation of the built environment are forecast to experience rapid and significant change in the next decade and more, but with all of the potential technologies available and challenges ahead it can be a real challenge to know how to prepare and where to start. This chapter describes some of the potential implications of change on businesses and how they operate including changes to business models, development of new solutions and a move to a more outcomes-based approach. It also discusses the need to be more agile than has traditionally been the case, and the benefits of having a portfolio of business models instead of only relying on one, to minimise the potential impact of outside influences.
