Chapter 21: Circularity Enablement

With the move towards a zero-carbon built environment in the next few decades, and the need to refurbish or replace existing assets, there needs to be an increased focus on the reuse of existing assets, products and systems. This chapter describes a number of activities that can support this reuse but starts with looking at how to optimise material use through manufacturing-led approaches. The potential for extending the lifespan of assets is considered, and guidance is provided on how to prepare for products and systems to be dismantled and reused. A model on how and when materials can re-enter the supply chain is presented, enabling necessary activities to be identified and compared.
