Ground anchors and retraining piles have been installed on cut slopes on expressways in Japan to ensure slope stability. Ground anchors have been adopted on numerous slopes because of the ease of construction and short construction period required. Some of the ground anchors were constructed some time ago and have been in service for approximately 40 years. Some have fractured and are no longer functional as originally intended due to deterioration or ground deformation.
