MR VAN OOSTEROM (Paper 1) I wish to correct the impression inadvertently given in paragraphs 1 -3 that the Flood Studies Report was produced to meet the requirements only of engineers working in the land drainage and flood protection field. Their colleagues on the reservoir design side of the profession were also very conscious of the need for bringing up to date the flood estimation methods for spillway design first laid down during the 1930s. This dual interest led to the involvement of the Institution of Civil Engineers, who, after holding their River Flood Hydrology symposium during 1966, published their Report on Floods in the United Kingdom during 1967. It was this report, rather than the needs of river engineers in particular, that eventually persuaded the Government of the day to make funds available for the production of the Flood Studies Report.
