Since the IHD ended in December, the work of the British National Committee for the IHD has ended with joint sponsorship of this Conference. During the course of the IHD it has become customary to speak of scientific hydrology and operational hydrology and it was arranged that UNESC O should retain international responsibility for scientific hydrology and the World Meteorological Organization should assume responsibility for operational hydrology. Whatever the distinction, there is no doubt about the national and international importance of ensuring that advances in hydrology as an environmental science are effectively applied to engineering and other practical problems.
