In 1973, little or no attention was given to two-dimensional boiler modelling - all work was concentrated on mono-tube boiler calculations for which there was little or no detailed experimental verification. Many boiler models were developed for analogue or hybrid solution and very often for use within a total plant model. Hence the physical representation was limited by the computer hardware complement. Digital solutions were impeded by the lack of development of fast integration algorithms, and particularly so for the solution of boiler equations within a total plant environment. Many large amplitude non-linear transients could not be modelled at an acceptable confidence
