PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION
Dr. AXISA introduced his paper by setting out the objectives (1) modelling the fuel effects (2) finite element analysis using the ROTOR computer programme (3) confirmatory experimental results.
He then listed the fluid effects which were to be examined for the non-rotating shaft i.e. inertial, compressibility and viscosity effects. He explained how these parameters were included in the analytical solution and the problem solved using the iterative process of the ROTOR programme. The experimental work was conducted using a rig where a rotating shaft 4m long could be submerged to variable depths in a liquid which was contained in the annulus formed by an outer cylindrical shell. The experimental results showed a much greater damping effect than that derived analytically.
