Mr T. Beaman (London Nuclear Decontamination3 Niagara Falls)
The decontamination of the Vermont Yankee and Brunswick II Reactor Water Clean-up Systems were performed over the past twelve months by London Nuclear to facilitate maintenance on the heads of the regenerative heat exchangers in the system. Equipment designed by London Nuclear was added to the clean-up system to provide for chemistry and process control in a closed loop around the heat exchangers. The reagent was circulated for less than 24 hours in each case at temperatures of up to 110°C. A number of radiation field measurements were taken around each system before and after the decontamination to determine the level of field reduction. The results indicated greater than 80% activity removal.
