Abstract
Preliminary geotechnical studies are a key element in managing ground risk in construction. They take the form of a desk study in which relevant available documentary information about the ground at a site is identified, obtained and reviewed. A walkover site survey adds significant value. The preliminary study should be completed before scoping and specifying a ground investigation to help focus the ground investigation and to maximise its value and relevance.
