Studies carried out during the period 1988–90 for the Madras Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, mainly as part of a UNDP technical assistance programme to the Government of Tamil Nadu in southern India, included making estimates of the yield and reliability of the city's surface and groundwater resources. The paper describes the methods of analysis adopted and the results obtained. A combined surface and groundwater model was developed to simulate the conjunctive use of the city's reservoirs and well fields.
