An increasing number of small embankment-type reservoirs will be constructed in the future in response to the growing trends for increased landscaping/amenity lakes and changing agricultural practice. Whilst some will be sufficiently large to come within the scope of the Reservoirs Act 1975, most are likely to fall in the capacity range of 2500 – 25000m3 stored above ground level. Many design aspects will be similar to those of reservoirs within the Act, but the reduction in size may change the emphasis; environmental constraint may also be significantly different. Present guidance for these small reservoirs in the existing MAFF guide has become outdated and too narrow in its approach. Thus CIRIA have recently commissioned preparation of a new guide for issue in the near future.
