As part of a regular Reservoirs Act inspection piezometers were installed in the upstream slope of Bartley Reservoir embankment dam. The piezometers were monitored closely during two periods of fairly rapid drawdown. Whilst piezometer levels in the stone weight zones behaved as expected, B values in the clay fill were below unity. This resulted in a significiantly lower than expected factor of safety for the rapid drawdown situation. This paper describes the field installations, shows typical examples of field data obtained, and discusses the reasons for the unexpected results.
